The Ontario new Expression of Interest (EOI) system is already accepting applications for its in-demand worker immigration program.
The EOI system for the In-Demand Skills stream under the Employer Job Offer Category of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is now online.
In the EOI system, the new stream joins the Foreign Worker and International Student streams. In March 2021, these programs were the first to be included in the new applicant intake system. For the Master’s Graduate and Ph.D. Graduate courses, Ontario still needs to establish the EOI system. These Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) will be a component of the EOI system “in the near future,” according to the OINP website.
Candidates who participate in the EOI system can register at any time to be considered for immigration to Ontario. Ontario uses a scoring matrix to rank candidates’ profiles. Among other things, it considers education, employment experience, and the desired destination in Ontario. The goal is to help applicants who have the necessary skills and experience to succeed in the Ontario labour market.
Candidates that register for the EOI system are not guaranteed to be invited to seek a provincial nomination. In Ontario’s EOI pool, profiles are valid for 12 months. Registrants may be contacted by the OINP at any time to apply for a nomination.
In the most recent round of the EOI system, Ontario asked 940 international students and foreign workers to submit for nomination.
About the Stream of In-Demand Skills
This immigration program places a greater emphasis on regional demand than on occupational skill levels. Many government-designated “high-skilled” vocations are the focus of many immigration initiatives. Despite this, Ontario continues to face labour shortages in “low skilled” occupations.
Enter the Stream of In-Demand Skills. Foreign workers with qualified job offers in Ontario can apply for a PNP if they have worked in the province for at least nine months in the previous three years. Seasonal work is ineligible for meeting the work requirement. If the candidate fulfilled the required number of work hours, part-time work may be acceptable. This might be 1,200 hours of paid work in one job over the period of 18 months or 1,200 hours of paid work in several jobs for at least 30 hours per week for nine months.
There are a few further prerequisites for eligibility. Candidates must, among other things, have a high school diploma, a language score of at least 4 in all proficiencies, and appropriate settlement funds.
